SECTION 9.

In 1968, The USS SAVAGE played a role in the 20th Century Fox production of TORA! TORA! TORA! as  the  USS  WARD.

The WARD was the ship outside Pearl Harbor on the morning of 07 December, 1941 prior to the attack  by  Japan.

The WARD (played by the SAVAGE) fired it's 2 1/2 inch cannons at the miniature Japanese sub, then dropped  depth  charges  to  simulate  chasing  the  sub.

Then the WARD reverted back to the SAVAGE with full speed ahead to enter Pearl Harbor upon discovery  of  holes  created  in  the  ship's  bottom  due  to  the  concussion  of  the  depth   charges.

On the same note, SM3 Cornall was hired by 20th Century Fox to signal the ship from the "WARD" to the tug that the sub was following. Cornall wasn't instructed on what to send so he decided to send the name of his hometown.

Cornall received his thirty dollar check but the scene was cut from the movie. The director that was on the "WARD" asked Cornall, obviously because he was now considered a professional actor due to payment received, if he would like to "play" in other scenes. Cornall accepted the "role" and is willing to show TORA! TORA! TORA! to those members interested on a VCR at any further reunions. He will put the movie on slow speed when he is seen in a four second solo. Autographs may be obtained for a nominal fee!
